5 Signs Your Sump Pump Is About to Fail

4 min read

Most sump pumps don't die quietly. They rattle, cycle strangely, or start working overtime for weeks before they finally give out, usually during the worst possible storm. If you know what to listen and look for, you can usually catch a failing pump with enough time to replace it on your own schedule instead of during an emergency.

Here are the five warning signs worth paying attention to.

1. Strange vibrating or grinding noises

A healthy sump pump runs with a fairly consistent hum. If you start hearing rattling, grinding, or a loud vibration when it kicks on, something inside the pump housing has likely shifted or worn down, often the impeller or the motor bearings. These noises tend to get worse over time, not better, and they're one of the clearest early indicators that a pump is nearing the end of its life.

2. It runs constantly, even without heavy rain

A sump pump should turn on when water reaches a certain level in the pit and shut off once it's cleared. If yours seems to be running almost nonstop, even on dry days, that's not a sign of a hardworking pump. It usually means the float switch is stuck, the check valve isn't holding, or the pump has lost enough efficiency that it can't clear the pit properly in one cycle. Constant running also burns out motors much faster.

3. It's more than 7 to 10 years old

Sump pumps have a working lifespan, and for most residential models that's somewhere in the 7 to 10 year range, sometimes less if the pump has been running hard every year. If you don't know how old yours is, check the pit for a manufacture date sticker or think back to when the house was purchased or the basement was finished. A pump nearing or past that age deserves a closer look even if it seems to be working fine right now.

4. Visible rust on the pump or fittings

Rust anywhere on the pump body, the discharge pipe fittings, or the check valve is a sign that moisture has been sitting somewhere it shouldn't, and that corrosion is actively working against the metal components. Rust can weaken housings, seize moving parts, and eventually cause a pump to fail outright. If you spot it, don't wait for the next heavy rain to find out how far it's progressed.

5. Short cycling

Short cycling is when the pump turns on and off rapidly in quick succession, sometimes several times a minute, instead of running a normal cycle and resting. This is often caused by:

  • A float switch positioned too close to the on/off trigger points
  • A pit that's too small for the pump's output
  • A failing check valve letting water flow back into the pit after each cycle

Whatever the cause, short cycling puts a lot of extra wear on the motor and switch, and it's a strong sign the system needs attention before it fails completely.

Don't wait for a flooded basement to find out

The frustrating thing about sump pump failure is that it tends to happen exactly when you need the pump most, in the middle of a heavy storm when the power might also be flickering. If you're noticing any combination of these signs, it's worth testing the pump now (pour a bucket of water into the pit and watch it respond) rather than assuming it'll hold up next time.

If your pump is showing its age, making noises that weren't there before, or you're just not confident it'll handle the next big storm, give ProFlow Plumbing a call at (555) 010-4477. We can inspect the whole system, including the check valve and discharge line, and get a reliable pump in place before you're standing in an inch of water at 2 a.m.
