Preparing Your Plumbing for a Long Vacation

4 min read

Picture this: you come home from two relaxing weeks away to a water-stained ceiling, a soaked carpet, and a water bill that makes your stomach drop. It's a more common story than you'd think, and it almost always comes down to a small plumbing issue that had the run of an empty house for far too long. A little prep before you leave takes maybe twenty minutes and can prevent all of it.

Shut off the main water valve

This is the single most effective thing you can do before an extended trip. Shutting off your home's main water valve means that even if a supply line fails or a faucet connection gives out while you're gone, there's no pressurized water source to keep feeding a leak. Locate your main shutoff (usually near where the water line enters your home, in a basement, utility closet, or near the water meter) and turn it off before you leave.

If you're worried about forgetting appliances like the water heater or an ice maker that rely on water pressure, know that shutting off the main valve is generally safe for a trip of a week or two. Just remember to turn it back on when you return, and check for any drips at fixtures as pressure returns to the system.

Run the garbage disposal before you go

Any food scraps left sitting in the disposal can start to smell and even attract pests over an extended absence. Run it with cold water for a few seconds before you lock up, ideally after grinding a bit of ice or citrus peel to freshen it up.

Set your water heater to vacation mode

Many water heaters, both gas and electric, have a "vacation" or "away" setting that keeps the tank at a lower, safe temperature instead of running at full heating cycles the whole time you're gone. This saves energy without letting the tank go completely cold, which matters because a tank that's cooled all the way down can take a while to reheat when you return, and running a water heater at full temperature with no one using hot water is simply wasted energy.

If your model doesn't have a dedicated vacation mode, lowering the thermostat dial a bit accomplishes something similar.

Check for existing slow leaks before you leave

Take five minutes to look under sinks, around the base of the toilet, and near the water heater for any sign of a slow leak, dampness, or a musty smell. A drip that's barely noticeable now can become a real problem if it's left unattended for a week or two with nobody around to catch it early.

Consider a smart water shutoff or leak sensor

If you travel frequently or will be away for an extended period, a smart water sensor placed near common leak points, under sinks, near the water heater, in the laundry room, can alert you by phone the moment it detects moisture. Some systems can even shut off the main water supply automatically. These aren't necessary for every trip, but they're worth considering if peace of mind while traveling is a priority.

A simple pre-vacation checklist

  • Shut off the main water valve
  • Run the garbage disposal briefly to clear any food scraps
  • Set the water heater to vacation mode or lower the temperature
  • Do a quick visual check under sinks and around the water heater
  • Ask a neighbor or house sitter to peek in periodically if you'll be gone more than a week or two
