Holiday Hosting: The Plumbing Prep Nobody Thinks About
Hosting the holidays means planning the menu, cleaning the house, and maybe finding extra chairs for the table. What rarely makes the list is plumbing prep, even though a house full of guests and a kitchen in full holiday-cooking mode puts more strain on your pipes and fixtures than almost any other time of year. A little attention beforehand goes a long way toward keeping the day running smoothly.
Grease is the biggest holiday drain hazard
Holiday cooking means a lot more grease and fat going down the kitchen sink than usual, from roasting pans, gravy, and general cleanup. Grease seems harmless when it's liquid and hot, but it cools and solidifies as it travels through your pipes, gradually narrowing the passage and catching other debris along the way. This is one of the most common reasons kitchen sinks back up right in the middle of a holiday gathering.
Instead of pouring grease down the drain:
- Let it cool in the pan, then scrape it into the trash or a disposable container
- Wipe greasy pans with a paper towel before washing them
- Remind guests helping with cleanup, since they may not know your kitchen's habits
Don't overload the garbage disposal
Holiday meal prep produces a lot of food scraps, and it's tempting to just run everything through the disposal. But fibrous vegetables (celery, corn husks), starchy items (mashed potatoes, rice, pasta), and bones are all things a disposal handles poorly, leading to jams or a struggling motor right when you need the kitchen working smoothly. Scrape plates into the trash or a compost bin, and save the disposal for smaller, softer scraps.
Extra guests mean extra bathroom and shower use
If you're hosting overnight guests, your plumbing system is suddenly handling a lot more toilet flushes and possibly more showers than it does on a normal day. This is worth thinking about especially if you're on a septic system, where a sudden spike in usage over a short period can strain the system's capacity. Spreading out shower times when possible and asking guests to be mindful of what goes down the toilet (nothing but toilet paper) helps.
Check your water heater capacity ahead of time
A water heater sized comfortably for your everyday household might struggle to keep up with several guests showering back to back, especially first thing in the morning. There's not much you can do to change your tank's capacity overnight, but knowing its limits ahead of time means you can stagger shower times or set expectations with guests rather than getting surprised by cold water mid-visit.
A quick pre-hosting plumbing check
- Test that all toilets flush properly and don't run continuously
- Check that drains in guest bathrooms aren't already slow
- Clear out the kitchen sink's P-trap if it's been draining sluggishly
- Make sure everyone in the house knows where the main water shutoff is, just in case
- Have a plunger accessible in every bathroom guests will use
When the holiday clog happens anyway
Even with the best prep, sometimes a sink backs up or a toilet clogs right in the middle of a gathering. Most of the time a plunger and a little patience will handle it. But if a backup doesn't clear, or if you're dealing with multiple slow drains at once, that's not something worth fighting through on a holiday when you'd rather be with your guests.
